In Milton Keynes, there are 1,450 kilometres (900 miles) of footway at an average width of 1.8 metres. This equates to just over 2.6 million square metres of footway surface. Additionally, we have 350 kilometres (217 miles) of Redways with a surface area of 1 million square metres. In 2016, the cost to resurface all the footways and Redways was £216million at an average price of £60 per square metre.
From the condition surveys, we know that we do not need to resurface all footways and Redways at the same time. Instead, we use approaches known as a life cycle plan and prevention. We apply factors to select schemes to bring about most improvement by assessing the condition scores to find the sections needing attention and treatments that best meet our policy aims and offer value for money then allocate the available funds to form projects, schemes and programmes of work
