A509 / M1 Junction 14 Project - Efficiencies in Work Practices

MK Highways undertook a 9 day nighttime closure of Junction 14 of the M1 to resurface the A509, see how we combined multiple work to create efficiencies

Due to the nature and difficulties of the location work had to take place overnight and Traffic Management costs for a single scheme were high therefore discussions through Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) took place with Ringway with a view to co-ordinate as much ancilliary work to eliminate the need to revisit this site for any future maintenance.

In addition in order to maximise the lifecycle of the road surface at a location that has high volumes of traffic MK Highways specified a 35/14 HRA with a 20mm Pre Coated Chipping in line with the authorities strategy for the networks grid road roundabouts to enhance longevity of the road surface.

The scheme also allowed access to enable the 12 m street lighting columns to be converted to LED technology again in line with its Asset Strategy to reduce energy and maintenance costs and enhance the lighting stocks lifecycle.
