Milton Keynes has 1,251 kilometres (777 miles) of roads at an average width of 7.3 metres. This equates to just over 9 million square metres of road surface. In 2016, the total cost to resurface it all is £229 million at an average price of £25 per square metre.
From the condition surveys, we know that we do not need to resurface all the roads at the same time. Instead, we use approaches known as a life cycle plan and prevention.
We apply factors to select schemes to bring about most improvement by assessing the condition scores to find the sections needing attention and treatments that best meet our policy aims and offer value for money then allocate the available funds to form projects, schemes and programmes of work.
